DRAWING

 

Fashion Illustration with Charis DeRemer

One class per week for five weeks

Ages 12 and older

$65 per person (plus supplies)

Create stylized fashion sketches that are bold and expressive, yet loose and casual. Learn to capture the essence of a pose. Fundamentals such as proportion, form, anatomical exaggerations and gestures are covered in a way that encourages students to enjoy the drawing process and create a great foundation sketch. You will also learn new techniques, explore materials, find resources for inspiration and reference images, apply paint to your watercolor paper, and make beautiful finishing touches with unique embellishments. Through curated resources and hands on exercises, you will learn the process of creating stunning fashion illustrations. Basic sketching and painting experience is a plus, but is not required. 

 

Dynamic Drawing: Awesome Animals with Charis DeRemer

Learn basic realistic sketching skills by way of creating cool animal drawings. Fundamentals are covered in a way that encourages students to enjoy the drawing process while making realistic pictures with personality. Students also learn to find good reference images, how to compose a scene and set a visual mood, and how to draw dramatic finishing touches like fur, texture and lighting.

For advanced students seeking to challenge themselves and grow in their realistic drawing skills. Advanced topics are covered such as perspective, anatomy, foreshortening, motion, texture, construction, composition, lighting, etc. Learn how to solve complicated visual and drawing problems, and enhance your ability to create realistic drawings of people, animals, buildings, vehicles, and landscapes in a dynamic way. Basic sketching experience is preferred. 

 

Anime & Entertainment Art with Charis DeRemer

For tweens and teens that enjoy manga/comic/cartoon art and love to draw characters. Students learn how to create and develop their own characters for video games, animation films, comics, illustrations, etc. through fun and exciting lessons in facial expression, action poses, costumes, and storytelling. Brainstorming, along with conceptualization of a story and ideas will be covered along with basic drawing construction, face development, body proportions, inking, shading, coloring, and final design including imagined environments, vehicles and props. Learn how to communicate your vivid imagination through compelling illustrations!

Learn to apply your drawing and painting skills to produce art that gets used in the real world. Pick from projects like CD covers, stationery designs, greeting card design, t-shirt design, poster art, children’s book illustration, and illustrations for ads and magazine articles. Learn the basics of color theory and using pen and ink and/or paint. Brainstorming, research, thumbnails, imagination and conceptualization, composition, finding a design process and receiving feedback throughout are emphasized. A quick survey of the history of illustration and discussion of ways to get your art out there rounds out the class. With imagination and a little hard work, anybody can create cool designs and lasting imagery that does more than just hang on a wall! Some previous basic drawing and painting experience is recommended.

 

PAINTING

 

Hawaiian Floral I – Composition, Design, Technique with Davilla Harding

One class per week for four weeks

Through the study of basic art principles, participants will learn to interpret their vision of Nature’s beauty through the use of vibrant, translucent watercolors. With this study, floral paintings are transformed into beautiful compositions that “dance” with light and color.

 

Hawaiian Floral II – A Stroll through the Garden with Davilla Harding

One class per week for four weeks

Participants continue to develop their artistic skills as they learn and explore basic art principles while painting exquisite Hawaiian flowers/vegetation in watercolor. Lessons will focus on creating luscious color, dramatic backgrounds and unique compositions.

 

Hawaiian Still Life I – Painting Luxurious Textures with Davilla Harding

One class per week for four weeks

Ages 11 and older

$100 per person (Some supplies provided)

Tuesdays, 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.

Using classic watercolor techniques for painting textures, the participants will learn to create luxurious still life paintings. This will be done by 1) learning how to create interesting compositions, 2) mingling colors that glow and bring a painting “to life,” and 3) developing dramatic, colorful shadows.

 

The “Story” of Still Life – “Thanks for the Memories” with Davilla Harding

One class per week for four weeks

Using objects and keepsakes that evoke fond memories, participants will create paintings that “tell a story.” This will transform a simple still life into a lovely watercolor painting with depth, meaning and charm.

Capture the essence and beauty of living things in paint. Realistic painting skills and techniques are emphasized as students create dramatic compositions of people, or animals, or both. Advanced topics in proportion, gesture, facial features, full body poses, anatomy, skin tones, texture, fur, color theory, lighting, form, etc. are covered. You will learn a practical working process to create your own truly original image in paint.

Beginning Origami with Chris Haws

Beginning Origami will teach students the basics of the Japanese art of paper folding.  We will cover topics including types of folds, origami bases, and origami and its relation to Japanese culture. Some designs covered include the crane, ball, chrysanthemum, present boxes, flower and stem, lily, valentine, butterfly, frog, and more.

 

Intermediate Origami with Chris Haws

One class per week for four weeks

In this class we will continue our discussion of Japanese culture and origami as an art form and mathematical expression while building on the skills we learned in Beginning Origami. Techniques covered will include sinking, rabbit ear folding, swivel folding, crimp folding, box pleating, and the blintz and pig bases. We will fold origami to create a poppy, elephant, rose, snake, water lily, bull, sunflower, and the dreaded Cerberus! Must have taken Beginning Origami or demonstrate Origami skills to instructor.

 

Parent and Child Halloween Origami with Chris Haws

Creating ceramic forms on the potter’s wheel will be the main focus of this class.  Functional as well as decorative ceramics will be explored.  All of the fundamentals will be covered as well as advanced techniques.  The class will progress at each individual’s speed.

This class is perfect for those interested in learning basic ceramic techniques: pinch-pots, coil building, etc.  Students will also learn about underglaze and glaze technique by learning the entire process and how clay transformed. 

 

Framing

 

Basic Picture Framing with Marialaine Figuerres 

This is a one day class  

Offered on select Mondays or Saturdays, 9am-1pm (please call for dates)

Class Fee $75 (supplies included)

In this one-day class you will learn how to measure and cut a double mat for your 5 x 7 art work. We will also teach you how to use a joiner to make a wood frame. The class will finish with complete assembly of glass, foam core, backing and hanger. Upon class completion, you will be given a certificate allowing you to use our facility as a “self-help” customer. This class is open to students 16 years and older. Sign up early, space is limited!  Please contact the Frame Shop at 448-9907 ext. 108 for more information and to confirm dates.

Drawing with Glass with Jessica FitzGerald

In this class we will be drawing on glass with glass, to create work with more freedom than the rigidity of sheet glass generally allows.  Students will learn to use glass frit to create their own expressive designs with the flexibility of traditional media. 

 

Kiln Formed Vessels with Jessica FitzGerald

One class per week for four weeks

In this class students will slump and fuse glass sheet to build fully 3-dimensional pieces.  By utilizing different levels of fusing students will make unique vessels that move beyond basic slumping techniques to bring their work into the realm of full 3-dimensionality. Previous glass experience is recommended.

An introduction to kiln forming glass; students will learn how to cut and fuse sheet glass.  They will also learn about the effects of heat on glass, and how these differences can allow for texture on an otherwise smooth piece.  At the end of the class glass students will be able to use their pieces to learn about the basics of slumping.

 

Full Fusion with Jessica FitzGerald

One class per week for four weeks

Students will learn how to make and utilize simple molds in the making of their projects.  Smaller fragments and multiple layers will be combined to make a unified whole, which can then be slumped and/or further fused at the student’s discretion.  Students will then use a variety of cold techniques, such as drilling and sanding, to finish their pieces. Previous glass experience is recommended.

 

Holiday Fusion with Jessica FitzGerald

One class per week for six weeks

A fast-paced class where students will get to make decorations and ornaments for the holidays.  Each project will be finished in time for the holiday it is intended to be displayed on.

In this class we will explore composition, value, and color while discovering this friendly, vibrant medium. Students will learn pastel techniques for creating beautiful landscapes from photographs and what to look for in real life scenes to compose unique pieces. By the end of the last session, students will have created at least two complete pastel paintings and possess the skills to make so many more!

Ever see a drawn or painted portrait and wonder how they did that or wish you could create one of your own? In this course, students will learn steps and techniques on how to draw portraits from subjects in real life and from photographs. By the end of the course students will be able to mix paint to match flesh tones and shadows, capture likeness in paint, but more importantly, be able to create the illusion of life and character through painting or drawing.

Students will learn how to use their cameras to achieve various photographic techniques and understand digital photographic terminology and concepts. Lighting, framing and composition will be discussed to achieve quality images with a wide variety of examples provided. Low light, nature, sports, and leisure photography will no longer be guesswork and you will capture pictures as you’ve always wanted to.

 

 

QUILTING

 

Hawaiian Quilted Pillow with Sue Zane Williams

Students will learn the “snowflake” method of cutting out a Hawaiian motif and the technique of needle turn appliqué to apply the design to a background fabric.  These hand quilting concepts will allow 

students to complete a beautiful Hawaiian style pillow.  

 

Hawaiian Quilted Baby/Wall Quilt with Sue Zane Williams

One class per week for five weeks

Thursdays, 6 – 9 p.m.

Students will learn the techniques of needle turn appliqué and hand quilting to create an heirloom Hawaiian baby or wall quilt from a pattern of their choice (as available from the instructor’s collection).

Woodworking

 

Wood Safety Class

This is a one day class 

Every Saturday, 4:30 – 7:30 p.m.

Class Fee $20 (pre-registration necessary, please call the woodshop to secure your spot and arrive 15 minutes prior to class to sign in)

This 3 hour class will emphasize the proper and safe use of the different equipment in our shop. After completion of the class, you will be issued a woodshop safety certification card enabling the use of the shop tools and equipment. This class is for students 12 years and older. Ages 12-15 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
