Employment/ Volunteer Classes

Class Descriptions

Federal Employment 101: Navigating USAJobs – This class focuses on the details and language found throughout the federal hiring process and the USAJobs.gov website. We’ll help you to understand the different programs and application process from start to finish. Federal resume guidance is provided in Federal Employment 102 class. Clients are encouraged to follow-up with individual appointments or email communication for any clarification and/or assistance required.

Federal Employment 102: Federal Resume Writing – Federal resumes are different from private sector resumes. Let us help you get ready to build your draft federal resume and assist you in the ins and outs of the application process. Any question you have ever had about the resume and application packet can be answered in this class. Individual appointments for resume reviews is highly recommended. Federal Resume Writing Workshop for small group resume writing has been postponed until COVID restrictions are removed.

Civilian Resume Writing – This class will cover the different resume formats and the advantages and disadvantages of each. Learn how to write powerful accomplishments that help you stand out from the competition, proper formatting, common mistakes to avoid, and so much more. Note: this class targets private sector resumes only.

Acing the Interview – The resume got you the interview, but interview skills are key to landing the job! Learn how to position yourself as the best candidate, different interview styles and techniques, practice traditional and behavioral interview questions and learn common pitfalls to avoid. Individual appointments for interview assistance or practice are welcome and encouraged.

Salary Negotiations – Discussing money is uncomfortable for some and not so difficult for others. However, the same goes for many that we may be unsure about how to approach and guide the conversation when discussing our salary and/or benefits. This class guides you on how to look at negotiations so you won’t be so apprehensive about it, where to find the foundational information you need to bring to the negotiation table, how to start the conversation and what to do if the conversation doesn’t go the way you expected. We’ve got it covered so you don’t have to stress about it.

LinkedIn– Learn how to create your profile to capitalize off LinkedIn professional networking. In this interactive workshop, participants will learn how employers are taking advantage of the business and employment oriented social network to assist in networking, recruiting, and hiring. This class will demonstrate building your professional profile and summary, utilizing the job search functions, marketing yourself to LinkedIn recruiters, strengthening your network, and leveraging the LinkedIn resources to your advantage.

In-Dependents Overview – A class for high school graduates (or those preparing to graduate) and a parent to attend together. We try to schedule the class during a public school holiday or break so you don’t miss any class time. That’s because we’re nice like that! In this class, topics such as money management, health insurance, employment, planning towards higher education and other subjects are discussed. These are important to military dependents and should be addressed before you leave the nest. Come find out what you may not have thought you needed to think about. You don’t know what you don’t know until you wish you knew! There is a lot to learn for both the parent and the student, so we love to see the family attend together. We hope to “see” you there. Come and join us so you can start out on your best foot. “Adulting” is hard enough, we want to help alleviate some of the difficulty.

Military Spouse Employment Boot Camp – A half-day workshop JUST for spouses where we cover the “basics” (get the joke in the title?) of employment!  Training includes civilian and federal resumes, job searching, career exploration, interviewing, salary negotiations, and more! It’s an overview of all of our employment classes in one sitting geared specifically towards the spouses for a change. We promise you an informational and fun experience. Learning how to march or having to wear a uniform is not required.

Volunteer Opportunities  – Are you interested in volunteering and want to explore what options might be open to you? Join us for a one-hour class where we discuss ways you can volunteer around Hawaii, within the JBPHH community, online and/or within MFSC itself. After the class, for those interested in volunteering with MFSC, we offer a quick tour of the facility (Subject to COVID restrictions. Virtual class does not provide tour). Class is held regularly every 3rd Thursday of the month at 1:30 PM.

Employment Hot Topics- Want to explore everything having to do with employment? Join us for a one-stop-shop of employment topics open to all DoD ID card holders. Translations for military to civilian terms, filling in gaps in employment and learning how to quantify your accomplishments are only a few of the topics that will be covered. All items discussed in this class are collected from all of the classes provided by the MFSC Employment team.

Career Explorations: Discover what may be the perfect career for you through personality/interest assessments and career study. Focus on your strengths and avoid undesirable career aspects. Discussion on types of careers, work values, interests vs. skills knowledge and job search strategies are included. Individual appointments are available for a more in-depth analysis of your particular career choices.
