MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Troubleshoots central irrigation controller and satellite controllers. Inspects satellite controllers and ensures proper working order. Cleans controllers of dust and other foreign material from mechanism in controllers and sprays anti-corrosion chemical onto parts. Prevents ants and wasps from establishing nest.
Survey the golf course to eliminate wet and dry spots taking into consideration conditions such as infiltration rates, turf height (root zone depth and plant or turf coefficient), (evapotranspiration) climatic conditions, compaction, wind breaks, etc.
Provides input for improvement in the design of the irrigation and drainage systems.
Troubleshoots and repairs any breakage in the automatic irrigation system, controllers, control valves; dismantles valves and clean diaphragm, solenoid and valve seat assembly: checks and cleans sprinkler heads of dirt, grass, and foreign matter. Replace panel fuses; checks and resets circuit breakers: checks clock motors, and replace if required; checks electrical current to controllers land to valve connections.
Installs drainage pipe to minimize flooding taking into consideration grading and effect of aggregates (gravel, sand and dirt) on drainage.
Operates backhoe, dump truck, and trencher as required. Provides technical guidance to maintenance staff and work as lead in assignment of tasks and flow of work.
Performs other duties as assigned
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
Basic knowledge of Golf Course Irrigation System and major aspect of Golf Course Maintenance. Incumbent of this position will be responsible for the programming and operation of the computerized irrigation terminals, the operation of the computerized irrigation terminals, the operation of the manual irrigation system and pump station. Evaluates the situation and decides on the best method and technique and chooses tools and materials to carry out the job.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:
- Must have knowledge of standard plumbing methods and techniques.
- Must know how to measure, cut, bend and thread pipe and how to caulk and seal such things as elbows, union joints, etc.
- Must have skill needed to remove, clean, reinstall or replace joints and fixtures.
- Must have ability to add, subtract, multiply, divide and work with simple fractions.
- Must have skill in the use of tools and equipment such as tapes, rules, hacksaws, hand and power pipe threaders and cutters, packing and caulking irons, couplers, reducers, saddles, compression clamps, shovels, wire cutters, valve keys, PVC glue and pipe wrenches and cutters.
- Knowledge of the TORO Network 8000 satellite micro-computer irrigation controller, which also involves the knowledge of the electrical wiring of the satellite controller.
- Must also have knowledge of the operation installation and maintenance of the TORO series 660, 670, 680 and 690 valves in head irrigation sprinkler.
- Able to communicate clearly and effectively both verbally and in writing in English and possess basic math and reading skills.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Incumbent must have knowledge of the operation, troubleshooting and repair of an electronically controlled irrigation system. Ability in the use of tools and equipment for irrigation repair and installation. Possess some knowledge in construction and surveying in regards to grading and understands how aggregates (gravel, sand and dirt) affect drainage. Required to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, dig and work in wet and uncomfortable conditions. Incumbent may be required to lift material and equipment that weigh up to 50 pounds.
