INTRODUCTION:

This position is located at the Outdoor Adventure Program, a section of the Outdoor Recreation Division, Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR), Joint Base Pearl Harbor Hickam (JBPHH).  The purpose of this position is to provide program support for Outdoor Activities at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam.

 

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  

Provides / facilitates pre-programmed and impromptu activities pertaining to outdoor recreation activities; such as but not limited to; kayaking, outrigger canoeing, stand-up paddle boarding, snorkeling, surfing, hiking, climbing, fishing, etc.  Assist the Outdoor Adventure Programmer in scheduling and exploring new activities to introduce to the community; provides customer service and provides knowledgeable info on recreational opportunities around the local region.  Assists in planning, developing, and conducting an outdoor recreation program/activity, as well as upholds the practices of Outdoor Recreation’s risk management plan. Provides pre-trip coordination to include customer contacts, group briefings, safety checklist, risk management plans, assistant trip leader assignments, and gear listings.  Is the subject matter expert (SME) for trip outings and activities.  Assist in training and pre-trip planning to assigned employees, volunteers and interns.

Provides instructional classes and activities in aquatic and land base settings and demonstrates safety and conservation techniques for outdoor recreation and demonstrates safe use of equipment and techniques of various activities in an outdoor setting.

Sets up, removes, repairs and stores equipment.  Briefs customers on safety practices and techniques for using rental gear and preforms pre and post rental gear inspections.  Provides special event support when needed.  Provides transportation duties within the scope of traveling to recreational destinations within the region. May perform other related or incidental duties as assigned for the daily operations of Outdoor Recreation and its sub-programs such as parks, marinas, beaches and specialty programs.

Monitors the condition and inventory of OAP equipment and supplies used to support the program.  Reports equipment discrepancies to the Outdoor Recreation Programmer.  Provides minor repairs and facility maintenance such as rock climbing, walls, challenge course, bike and surfboard repair shop, etc.  Provides cashier duties, end of day reports, customer service, booking reservations, trips, activities, pavilions and related Outdoor Recreation functions.  Performs all other duties as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

One to two years’ experience in a related recreational activity.  Applicant must have experience and a working familiarity with the routines and procedures followed in group activities or programs; and practical knowledge and/or experience of outdoor recreational activities and equipment, rules and procedures in a recreation program activity.  Incumbent must have or must acquire within three months of employment: Water Front Lifeguard Certification, basic First Aid Training, and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) training for both Child and Adult.
